‘teachability = humility + application.’
– Eric Metcalf
Twelve churches met together at Richwoods Christian Church Tuesday, May 8 for a day of learning and growing together. At no cost, churches from around the midwest brought their staff members and leaders to spend the day talking about how to reach their redemptive potential. Jim Powell (lead pastor at Richwoods Christian Church) and Eric Metcalf (director of the New Thing Network) each taught during the two main sessions and also took part in a joint Q & A discussion after staff members met in ministry-specific discussion pods during a break out session.
In session one, lead pastor Jim Powell shared from Ephesians 4 – that church leaders are called to ‘equip his people for works of service.‘ As churches grow, to believe that they can keep doing what they’re doing and continue to grow is a myth. Growth requires change. Leaders have a responsibility to empower and equip others for ministry on the edges – enabling them to ‘get in on’ what God is doing in and through our churches.

In session two, Eric Metcalf from The New Thing Network discussed the responsibility church leaders have to recognize potential leaders and then walked through the practical processes – the nuts and bolts – of recruiting and reproducing apprentices.
session two: how to reproduce yourself, by eric metcalf
After lunch, each ministry-specific pod met with staff members from each church during the breakout sessions. Leaders laughed with, learned from and challenged one another as they together discussed how to move forward in implementing key learnings from the morning sessions. From worship ministry, children’s ministry, office/administration, lead pastors, communications, small groups to executive pastors and everything in between, Richwoods staff members facilitated discussion with their peers from 11 different churches.
In the final session, Eric and Jim responded to a few questions from the participants. Responding to questions about reproducing leaders (including the teaching/lead pastors), Jim and Eric recap some of the key concepts from the day.
